5 Game of Thrones Locations in Malta
If you’re a Game of Thrones fan then Malta is the ideal place to visit and soak up the Game of Thrones atmosphere. Many of the scenes from the first season were filmed in and around Malta & Gozo. Mdina was the setting for King’s Landing the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. Here are 5 locations where filming took place. The Wedding of Daenery Targaryen & Khal Drogo
Daenery married Khal Drogo, the leader of the Dothraki in Season 1 of Game of Thrones and also given a present of 3 dragon eggs by Magister Illyrio. For this scene the location chosen was the Azure Window in Dwejra Bay, Gozo. Sadly the Azure Window has since crumbled and fallen into the sea which was a big loss as it was a major tourist attraction on the island. However the bay and rocky inlets are a great place to visit still.
Courtyard of the Red Keep
The Red Keep in Game of Thrones is the castle located on Aegon's Hill in King' Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. Is is also the home of the Iron Throne. The courtyard of the Red Keep in the series is located in the town of Rabat near Mdina in St. Dominic’s Priory. This is where where Ned Stark confronts Cersei Lanaster about her improprieties with Jaime and sealed his fate.
Arrival of Catelyn Stark at King's Landing
This scene was filmed at Mdina Gate, the entrance to the fortified city of Mdina located in the center of Malta. Mdina was once the capital of Malta and an ideal place for this scene.
The Birth of the Dragons
The scene where Daenery Targaryen emerges from the flames with her baby dragons was filmed at Mtahleb Cliffs on the western side of Malta. This was also the setting for several others scenes containing the Dothrakis.
The Trial & Execution of Ned Stark
Remember Ned’s trail where the evil Joffrey beheaded Net Stark? The scenes from this part of Season One was actually filmed in the Lazzaretto on Manoel Island in Malta.
